GET started

Now that you’ve made a commitment to getting that space in order – where do you start?

  1. Determine what you want to accomplish in the space you’ve decided to address. How do you want to utilize the space? What do you want to do in the space?
  2. Clear out or empty that space. This typically involves getting rid of some things. Clear the clutter. Let go of what no longer serves you and what you no longer use or love.
  3. Make note of any special requirements (certain size sports equipment or electronic equipment, a collection of hats or shoes) that need to be accomodated in the space.
  4. Consider the aesthetic. How do you want it to look/feel? Will it be in a high traffic area or behind closed doors? Tear or print out pictures of what you like. Clarify your vision.
  5. Determine the amount you’re comfortable with investing to organize this space – in both time and money. Prices and systems vary widely. Choose those suited to you, your budget and your goals for the project.
  6. Make sure all walls and all obstacles in that space are accessible for taking measurements.
  7. Be realistic. You can only put so many ounces of coffee in your 20 oz. grande cup. Professionals will do their best to accommodate your every wish and desire, but you may still have more stuff than won’t fit in the space.
  8. Share your goals, pictures and things that need to be accommodated with your storage design professional.
